Selfie-Lid Dalmatians

September 2022

lady.png

Welcome to another brewing (breeding) project at the Brewery! This Selfie-Lid Dali project again focuses on NIB Dalmatians, this time with selfie lids!

A selfie lid occurs when the pet's eyelid colour matches their coat colour and can look quite effective:

slefiesquad2.png

I wanted to create a collection of Dalmatian pairs that could pass down matching lid and coat colours - why? Well, just for the love of Dalmatian breeding of course! This selfie lid project yielded some great results, enabled me to expand on my Dragon Fruit Dali project and create some spooky pups for Halloween!

Note: Cream & steel lids cannot naturally occur so don't aim for these colours! Gray lids are close to steel and steel pups with gray lids appear in this project.

Note 2: This page was made (Jan-Feb 2023) a long time after the project was completed and so won't be as in-depth as previous project pages. I love making project pages to share results and all the new petz brewed! If you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Recipe

Let's brew some Selfie Lid Dalis!

Hallopup.png
  • Petz A

  • GenePoolz

  • Note-taking tools

  • Lots of patience

You will need:

  • Lots of AC Dali pairs! (The more you choose, the higher generation your final pups will be - it's up to you!)

Ingredients:

The same colour in the first coat slot AND eye lid slot in Set 1 of pup's GenePoolz - while this is not the only way to make a Selfie pup likely, having both colours on the same Set makes it more likely

they'll pass down to future offspring. (Especially if the parent is male.)

aims.png
Littlelady.png

Tips:

  • You will get a lot of white pups with black lids - always check GenePoolz as they may be carrying useful mutations!

  • Mutations always occur in the set of genes inherited from the mother. If you've got a colour mutation and want a better chance of passing it down down, make the dog male

  • Sometimes colours that appear are actually flukes - this isn't an issue if the dog looks the way you want, but it won't pass the fluke trait down! Again, make sure to always check GenePoolz.

  • Read CRUSHING's Breeding Guide & Amanda's tips on Cargo for more key breeding concepts - they're where most of these tips come from!

Secondary Aim:

To go even further and get the same colour in coat & eyelid slots in both Sets!

This is very extra, but it just means that (mutations aside) this parent is definitely going to pass down gray lids & a gray coat, increasing the chance of gray Selfie pups!

Primary Aim:

Method:

Breed and then breed some more.

This is a very rough method - there are many ways to achieve Selfie lid pups!

  1. Breed four couples (CxC, VxV, QxQ, PxP) and collect pups with colour mutations in lid and coat slots [Gen 2]

  2. Choose offspring with the same colour mutations (e.g. gray in lid/coat slot) and breed together (CCxVV, QQxPP) to get double colour coat/lid in both slots (e.g. gray lids or gray coats) (CV, QP) [Gen 3]

  3. Breed (CV) with other gen 3 (QP) to get corresponding lid/coat colour in (at least) one slot (CVQP) [Gen 4] (Aim)

Method, Illustrated (sort of):

Gen   1

Gen   2

In Gen 2 you can see the variety of colour mutations that occurred just from breeding Gen 1 pairs - can you tell which colours I was going for down the lines?

Gray (the Gen 3 dog) was a complete surprise when you see the colour genes of his parents (Quiet x Prince) - an example of mutation luck (even if it wasn't the colour I was aiming for with that pairing)! With Gray I achieved the primary aim, as he has gray in both eyelid and coat slots on one Set.

The family tree of Lady, one of my favourite pups to come out of the project.

In this illustration, I bred dogz with the wanted colour in different slots (e.g one dog with one gray lid bred with one dog with one grey coat). While this was eventually successful (little Lady!), I found I had more success breeding dogz with the same colour in same slots first (e.g. two dogz both with gray in one coat slot) and then aim for the other slot category (e.g lids) in the next generation (as the Method describes). It would've made more sense to illustrate this, but I'd already made these graphics >.< if anything isn't clear, please reach out to ask any questions!

Lady's genes are shown above under 'Aim' & 'Secondary Aim'. Thanks to mum Alu's eyelid colour, Lady inherited gray colouring from both parents and a mutated coat colour to match! With Lady, I achieved the secondary aim of one colour in all four slots! And a gorgeous gray Selfie pup!

Gen   3

Gen   4

So the moral of the Method is:

breed and then breed some more!

You can get so many different outcomes along the way to your desired result! Most of it is down to mutation luck which is why it has taken me ages to put a method together! You can't go too wrong honestly. If NIB is important to you, keep track of that otherwise, go nuts!

Outcomes & Discoveries

In total, I used 8 Adoption Center pairs which at times, got me up to Gen 5 pups. I wasn't focusing too much on generation though, as this project was more about colour mutations, so sometimes I stopped at lower generations. White Dalis with white lids & black Dalis with black lids were the ones I usually got fastest (sometimes by Gen 2) as these are default Dali colours. My focus on colour mutations meant I wasn't picky in places where I have been previously, such as eye colour and ear markings. Isn't that interesting?

Something I discovered during this project (meaning I didn't think about it until it happened) was that, while some Dalis like Cassius & Timbre here display selfie lids, the number of their lid colour is not the same number as their coat colour! Cassius' coat colour is cherry 55 but his lids are cherry 59! This means they appear slightly darker. Timbre's coat colour is brown 95 but her lids are 99! Did you notice this before I pointed it out? This slight difference frustratingly throws off the selfie effect a little. But this isn't a project-breaking issue, just my perfectionism on overdrive!

Nitpick time!

Halloween Litters 2022

I started this selfie project sometime in September 2022, but I was still going with it by October, so I decided to breed some special selfie Halloween Dalis - selfie lid Dalis in traditional Halloween colours: black, white and orange (or ginger in technical petz colour terms)! Green and orange eyes were also a must! Halloween is just the best and Dalis are my fave pet breed, so it was my dream mini project within a project! My aim was to breed some Dalis to keep and some to adopt out via PUGS.

I already had my ginger selfie with orange eyes, aptly named Halloween (M) as well as my gorgeous black Dali Bodu (F) with green eyes!

But, a plot twist, I didn't breed them together! (I think because Halloween is 3rd gen and Bodu is 4th - at this point I must've wanted to breed two 4th gens together, because the dog I went on to breed Bodu with is Halloween's son! This is what happens when you're trying to piece together a project a year later!)

PUGS Litter (adopted out 2022)

This is the adorable and very Halloween-coded litter result of Bodu x Sparkler. This litter went up on PUGS back in October 2022 and so all pups are now in new homes. I think you'll agree we got a great range of colours; these can also be passed down to spread Halloween Dalis! Witchy's eyes naturally mutated to black - perfect!

Kuro is from my Brewery Dali breeding project - I hoped to pass her black eyes onto a ginger Dali with ginger lids and so paired her with Halloween - I wasn't expecting such a beautiful trotter!

Spotlacking!

Soul was bred from a pair in my white lid/coat branch of the project (Fauna from the Outcomes section is her grandmother!) specifically to try and get slothy eyes on a Dali with white lids. Her eyes and spotlacking pattern also makes her ghostly in appearance, perfect for Halloween!
