Mermay

Happy May! This month, the sketch prompt of 'Mermay' is given to inspire artists to create fish-tailed creatures (you can typically see artist renditions on social media). I decided I would apply it to hexing and make a Merdali! This is my first adventure into body mods, and while it's quite a simple premise, it's still been tricky to get right. Nevertheless, I really like how it's turned out! External textures are by BAD_DEATH and Filthy Hippie, my go-to texture masters!

Prawn
Version 1
Here's Prawn, a first draft of the Merdali file, pre shiny scales! His body is an addball longer than the pups above, which I decided was just a bit too long!

Prawn is being naturally raised and is participating in Rho's May Photo-a-Day Challenge at RKC!

On Day 8 of the challenge, Prawn encountered the watering can which activated his sparkles! (i.e he got an upgrade ;) ) Now he more closely resembles the standard blue Merdali above, but with his extra addball and long body, Prawn is unique!
Tempura
Tempura is the son of Prawn and Pepper born on the 26th of May. He is the first bred Merdali and is a nice mix of mum and dad.
Siren is a Cherry-Gold Merdali made exclusively for The Flea Market.

This was such a fun exercise with internal textures - for ease of access, I didn't want Siren to need any external files. Super pleased with the result!

Siren
Of course I had to create a Sodapup version of the Merdali! Though whenever I hex a Sodapup, I never quite feel 100% with it! This lady is called Sodastream and is unique not just because she is based on the Sodapup, but because her tail is technically the same colour as her body! I just couldn't deviate from the ginger that I think of as the default Sodapup colour, but I think the hair3 texture and bubble paintballs help make the tail stand out still. The bubbles even look like scales which was a happy accident! I may use them in future Merdali designs.

Sodastream's tail fin texture is magicz by Filthy Hippie, my favourite texture! I may do another Mersoda version because I can never be 100% happy with Sodapup hexes!
Mersoda
Iridescent is a special custom Merdali made for Leashy, with textures by BAD_DEATH and Kitsune.
​
Leashy had a particularly colour scheme in mind and it was fun to incorporate them into a shimmering Merdali - one of my most favourite designs yet!
