Chablis (shab-lee): a collaborative breeding, showing and natural raising Dalmatian project
Contents

In 2021, I wanted to pair my favourite dalmatian Diamonds with another SGCh for a special litter. I loved the idea of collaborating with a dalmatian breeder and shower from the community to keep lines NIB and give puppies showing lineage for pomp and circumstance (which ultimately is what Chablis is all about). The puppies would also be naturally raised; previous projects had been very genetics-focused and breeding heavy, so not a lot of time was spent with puppies - Chablis would be a slower project.
Though the project started in 2021, it wasn't until 2023 that I decided to give related dalmatians their own prefix, Chablis. Chablis is sometimes an ingredient in a cocktail called a White Cargo, that also contains ice cream and gin! I found this cocktail when thinking of how I could reflect the first collaboration of this project between myself and Amanda. A White Cargo is a mix of our prefixes! So, I wanted a prefix that referred back to this cocktail and decided on Chablis.
The Chablis project activity is shared as a thread on the RKC petz forum. This page aims to summarise and highlight the dalmatians and collaborators involved.

First generation: Diamonds x Carlyle

Background

(Actually not very new at all, but I like this graphic)
I put out a request on the RKC forum and Amanda @ Cargo generously came forward with Carlyle who is stunning. I gave Amanda first pick of the litter and I chose two pups. The remaining pups were adopted out to the community.

Morganna
-
Show name: SGCh. Cargo/Gin's Bewitching Glade of Chablis
-
Shown?: Yes, to SGCh
-
Natural raising comments: Morganna has gorgeous dark green eyes. She is quite hot-headed and doesn't get along with Finlay. She really loves mum Diamonds.
I kept these two pups

Robena
Robena was adopted by Amanda and went on to have a litter of her own!

Morganna and Finlay had an illustrious show career, both making SGCh.

Second generation: Morganna, Finlay and two new litters

x 2!
I really enjoyed pairing Diamonds with Carlyle and showing and naturally raising their puppies. I knew I wanted to repeat the process! With Finlay and Morganna making SGCh, it was time to reach out to the community again for potential SGCh partners - the lines would continue! And this time, I would need to find two dalmatian breeders to collaborate with. Luckily the community is not short of those!

Collaborator: Szmantha (Sz)
Everald
-
Show name: Chablis/Sz's Knight of the Glade

Natural raising comments: Continuing the green eye theme! Everald is shy and his brother's shadow, but has come into his own as he's grown and practiced for showing.
Alastor
-
Show name: Chablis/Sz's Midnight in Eden
-
Shown?: Still in progress
-
Natural raising comments: Alastor has his mother's dark green eyes that are so striking. He also has a dipstick like dad! Very confident but loves Everald's attention.
I kept these two pups

Cerys
Cerys was adopted by Szmantha.

Alastor and Everald are still in the process of building their showing experience.

Meadowrue
-
Show name: Chablis/Poppyhill's Meadow of Jewels
-
Shown?: Still in progress
-
Natural raising comments: Meadowrue looks so much like her grandmother, Diamonds. She is very playful and loves her sister, Willowherb. With Bearberry, her feelings are mixed!
Bearberry
-
Show name: Chablis/Poppyhill's Teddy Treasure
-
Shown?: Still in progress
-
Natural raising comments: Bearberry is super spotty in contrast to his parents but has Zinnia's gorgeous golden eyes. Very independent, but will play fight with Meadowrue when the feeling takes him.
I kept these pups and Willoherb!

Campion
Campion was adopted by Nebula.

Willowherb
-
Show name: Chablis/Poppyhill's Rosebay
-
Shown?: Still in progress
-
Natural raising comments: Willowherb is also very spotty like her brother. There must be a high spot gene to complement the extreme spot OW! Willowherb is quite shy, but enjoys Meadowrue's company.

Bearberry, Meadowrue and Willowherb are still in the process of building their showing experience.

Future
The Chablis project has combined everything I love about Petz in no particular order: dalmatians, breeding, showing and collaboration! So many wonderful dalmatian puppies have been produced as part of the project and it was also great to spend some time with beloved petz that belong to other players.
A common Petz problem I run into is abundance; I don't want to believe that you can have too much of a good thing, but with each new litter comes more pups to raise and show and the admin grows. I finally put this page together after a long Petz hiatus in May 2026, which is three years since Chablis was established and five years since I first bred Diamonds with Carlyle. Does that matter? Now, I could put some limits on myself - I was in the habit of keeping two or three pups per litter, I could just keep one. Or keep none and challenge someone else to continue the legacy in their own way. But actually, the abundance is another Petz love of mine. It can keep going; more pups can be bred, there are more folk to chat to, more variations that pop up.
What is my point? The future of Chablis is unclear. I haven't got the second generation pups their complete showing titles yet. But that's ok, there's no rush. I wanted to make this page because it had been sat under construction for three years! So at some point I will work towards their titles probably, to overcome that feeling of incompleteness - maybe check back in another three years or so!
